Tour Plan

Day 01 Depart

Depart SFO: Depart for your flights to Italy. Dinner on-board, relax, and anticipate your arrival tomorrow.

Day 02 Rome

We are greeted upon arrival by our Holy Steps Travel and Tours Representative. Time permitting, we stop at the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls for our guided visit and celebrate Mass. We then transfer to our hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 03 Papal Audience

After breakfast we will explore the spiritual capital for all Catholics around the world. Today attend a papal audience pending the papal schedule, followed by a visit to the Vatican Museums. We will cover the Tapestry Gallery, the Raphael Rooms and the overwhelming Sistine Chapel with the restored mural of the Last Judgment. Later, enter the largest church in Christendom, St Peter’s Basilica, built on the site of St. Peter’s tomb. We will also visit the tomb of Pope John Paul II located at the Vatican   Return to the hotel for  dinner and overnight.

Day 04 Christian Rome

Following breakfast, we depart for full day, highlighting Christian Rome which includes a visit to the Basilica of St. Mary Major, the most important and the oldest church dedicated to Our Lady, which contains relics from the manger of the infant Jesus. Continue to the Basilica of St. John Lateran, the Pope’s Cathedral church where relics of both Sts. Peter and Paul remain under the main altar. See the Scala Santa (Holy Staircase) which is believed to be from Pilate’s palace in Jerusalem and brought to Rome by St. Helen in the 4th century. Time permitting, climb the steps on your knees in memory of Christ’s Passion.  Continue to the city center and enjoy break for lunch at Navona Square. After Lunch, we will enjoy a walking tour to see the Pantheon,  Church of Santa Maria Sopra Minerva  ( relics of St Catherine) and Trevi Fountain. Time at leisure for personal activities and shopping.

Day 05 Montecassino

Following breakfast, head south crossing through the Roman countryside with its villas and vineyards. During our drive, our tour escort will explain the spiritual, historical and cultural overview of Italy, which will help to orient you to this beautiful country and prepare you for all that you will experience in the days to follow. We stop at Montecassino, a beautiful abbey founded by Saint Benedict in 529. After lunch we continue through the countryside heading east to Padre Pio’s town, San Giovanni Rotondo, our base for the following two nights. Dinner and overnight.

Day 06 Padre Pio

After Mass at the tomb of St. Padre Pio, tour the sanctuary and see the old church and the crucifix he was praying in front of when he received the stigmata for the second time in 1918. See the confessional where Padre Pio spent innumerable hours with multitudes of pilgrims, view the Gargano Peninsula and the Grotto of St. Michael the Archangel. Six different Popes, St Francis and at least four other saints have knelt in prayer at this grotto, seeking the protection of St Michael the Archangel. Afterwards enjoy the panoramic view of the ocean and the surrounding countryside. Dinner and overnight.

Day 07 Lanciano and Loreto

 After breakfast, we make our way to Lanciano to visit the Church of St. Longinus where you see the Eucharistic Miracle and celebrate Mass. Continue toward the Adriatic coast to the Marian shrine of Loreto to visit the Holy House of Nazareth and the beautiful Madonna of Loreto. More than 50 popes have made a pilgrimage to the house transported by angels to this hill in central Italy in 1294. Tradition has it that this is the house in which Mary first prayed the Magnificat, in which Jesus grew to manhood, and in which the Holy Family lived. We continue to Assisi, the hometown of St. Francis, the patron saint of animals and the environment, and the founder of the Franciscan Order. St. Francis of Assisi is the first person recorded who received the stigmata.

Day 08 Assisi

After breakfast our walking guided tour departs from Santa Chiara Church that honors St. Clare, the foundress of the Poor Clare Sisters. This Saint followed the teachings of St. Francis very closely by also living a life of poverty and humility. By walk we reach the Santuario Della Spogliazione where Blessed Carlo Acutis’ tomb is placed. Carlo is the first millennial to be declared Blessed who loved the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. From there, we will continue on a walking tour through this picturesque town, including the birthplace of St. Francis, and finally we will visit St. Francis Basilica. In the upper basilica, we will marvel at the site of the great frescoes from Giotto, which describes the life of St Francis, in the lower basilica we visit the tomb of St. Francis. Here we celebrate Mass. Time for lunch. The afternoon is at leisure. Take this time for additional prayer, shop in the many gift shops . Return to the hotel in Torgiano, for dinner and overnight.

Day 09 Assisi

Day 9: Assisi: After breakfast, we drive to Orvieto, famous for its wine and the Cathedral, which is considered one of the most beautiful in Italy. We take a funicular to the town then enjoy a guided tour to see the dodecagon, a rare and unique 12-sided figure in the form of a bell tower, at Sant’ Andrea Church on Piazza della Repubblica, and continue the guided tour to the Cathedral, where we see the Eucharistic Miracle of Bolsena. Then we celebrate Mass. We then continue to Rome for dinner and overnight.

Day 10 Return To USA

Today we bid farewell to Italy with memories and keepsakes for a lifetime.
